19th Century Teak Campaign Chest (1860)

Made for British officers who took their furniture on campaign, this mid-19th-century teak chest was built to come apart and travel. It separates into two stacking sections, each with iron carrying handles on the sides, and has the brass corner mounts and flush-set brass pulls typical of true campaign pieces.

The top drawer is a hidden secretary. Its front folds down on brass quadrant hinges to make a writing surface. Inside is a fitted interior with arched pigeonholes, small paneled doors (the center one carved with reeded detail), and little drawers with ebony and bone knobs. Below it are three long drawers, and the whole chest stands on turned bun feet.
